I like to paint both spontaneously and with a plan or design. Sometimes, I just like to see the way paint flows on wet paper or to see the brilliancy of color. Other times I work out a careful design and patterns of light and dark before I begin painting. Either way, I know that in order to interpret my inner responses, I always rely on my years of basic training in drawing, painting and design. These are the tools which help me develop the skills needed for visual communication. Before you can bend the rules or experiment in any way, you need the fundamentals.
